October 2024

Welcome to The Acorn! Each month we share the latest trainings and resources available to child welfare professionals throughout Minnesota.

Updates

New Worker Foundations: Wheels Up!

Over the past year, our staff has referred to this time as our Year of Flight. Through countless hours of planning, collaboration, and effort, we are thrilled to finally see the launch of a completely updated Foundations training for all new child protection workers. Cohort 200 started in early September, and more are on the way. We acknowledge there has been some light turbulence as we navigated these changes, so keep reaching out to us as needed, and we'll do our best to provide a smooth flight.

Overview of ICWA/MIFPA Course Options
When assigning ICWA/MIFPA courses to your workers or registering for yourself through the Academy's Training Portal, make sure you select the correct option:

  • ICWA/MIFPA Ongoing Worker Training (CWTA X212) - Open to any current workers, new workers from Cohort 127 and before who missed this requirement, current new workers who are not able to get into CWTA X219 prior to Foundations, and supervisors.
  • ICWA/MIFPA Foundations for New Workers (CWTA X219) - ONLY for new child protection workers as a prerequisite to New Worker Foundations and assigned by a supervisor.
  • ICWA/MIFPA Foundations for County Agency Supervisors (CWTA X216) - ONLY for agency supervisors.

The curriculum is the same in all courses, but tailored to those attending. All courses are taught by the Tribal Training and Certification Partnership (TTCP).

QI Training Available: October 8-9

Many seats are available in this upcoming Qualified Individual (QI) virtual training. The next offering will be December 4-5. To express your interest in participating, email ffpsa.qualifiedindividual.dhs@state.mn.us.

New Worker Training

The updated New Worker Foundations is now ready and available in the Training Catalog. With the exception of new workers finishing the old curriculum (Cohorts 127 and before), all new child protection workers should plan to take the following courses. Supervisors can use this new checklist to help assign and monitor employee progress:

New Worker Orientation: Self-Paced Modules (CWTA X110)

Ask new workers to finish this course in the first few days on the job, and remind them that they cannot register for the instructor-led course until this is complete. Please note that the final completion grade for this course will take 6-8 business days to post (this includes time for the DEI team to grade all IDI requirements at the end of the course). You will not be able to register for the Instructor-Led Enhancement course until your final completion grade shows up on your training record. Please have your workers plan accordingly.

New Worker Orientation: Instructor-Led Enhancement
(CWTA X111)

This four-hour virtual training is designed to enhance what was learned in the Orientation modules, rather than repeat the information. The goal is to provide experiential learning that shows how the content covered in Orientation intersects with worker practice through a case study. Trainers will guide learners through a series of activities, reflections, and discussions. This course is required to complete before you can register for New Worker Foundations (CWTA X113).

ICWA/MIFPA Foundations for New Workers (CWTA X219)

This training is brought to you by the University of Minnesota Duluth Tribal Training and Certification Partnership (TTCP). This is an introductory course to the basics of the history of ICWA and application of ICWA and MIFPA. This course is required to complete before you can register for New Worker Foundations (CWTA X113).

October 28-29 | 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Each Day | Roseville

November 5-6 | 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Each Day | Roseville

November 12-13 | 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Each Day | Roseville

New Worker Foundations (CWTA X113)

This revised training is made up of self-paced, instructor-led (both in-person and virtual), and simulation. Additional details can be found here.

Cohort 203 | November 13 - March 5 |  Roseville

Cohort 204 | November 20 - March 7 |  Detroit Lakes
