New Worker Training: New Curriculum

The updated New Worker Foundations is now ready and available in the Training Catalog. With the exception of new workers finishing the old curriculum (Cohorts 127 and before), all new child protection workers should plan to take the following courses. Supervisors can use this new checklist to help assign and monitor employee progress:

New Worker Orientation: Self-Paced Modules (CWTA X110)

Ask new workers to finish this course in the first few days on the job, and remind them that they cannot register for the instructor-led course until this is complete. Please note that the final completion grade for this course will take 6-8 business days to post (this includes time for the DEI team to grade all IDI requirements at the end of the course). You will not be able to register for the Instructor-Led Enhancement course until your final completion grade shows up on your training record. Please have your workers plan accordingly.

New Worker Orientation: Instructor-Led Enhancement
(CWTA X111)

This four-hour virtual training is designed to enhance what was learned in the Orientation modules, rather than repeat the information. The goal is to provide experiential learning that shows how the content covered in Orientation intersects with worker practice through a case study. Trainers will guide learners through a series of activities, reflections, and discussions. This course is required to complete before you can register for New Worker Foundations (CWTA X113).

ICWA/MIFPA Foundations for New Workers (CWTA X219)

This training is brought to you by the University of Minnesota Duluth Tribal Training and Certification Partnership (TTCP). This is an introductory course to the basics of the history of ICWA and application of ICWA and MIFPA. This course is required to complete before you can register for New Worker Foundations (CWTA X113).

New Worker Foundations (CWTA X113)

This revised training is made up of self-paced, instructor-led (both in-person and virtual), and simulation. Additional details can be found here.

Child Welfare and Korean Americans in Minnesota

Asians make up the second largest immigrant group in the United States, and The Pew Research Center is predicting that Asians will become the largest immigrant group in the US by 2055. Zooming in on Minnesota, and Korean immigrants specifically, there are over 28,000 Koreans currently living in the state. This has impacts for child protection workers throughout Minnesota, especially when considering cultural differences. Check out this new infographic, brought to you by Dr. Wendy Haight and Sookyoung Park, MSW, PhD Candidate.

New Support for Recovery

CASCW is excited to announce two brand new video modules for child welfare professionals to aid them in supporting addiction recovery. The modules were developed by Amy Krentzman, PhD, an Associate Professor with the School of Social Work, Shelby Wren a PhD Candidate and Research Assistant, and Sonia Rose Harris, MPH, a Graduate Research Assistant.

The first module, New Support for Recovery, discusses a variety of important resources for people in recovery (it is primarily focused on recovery from substance use disorders) including some new and emerging trends. The second module, Medication for Recovery, covers medications to treat opioid-use disorders for training purposes for social workers in child welfare. It reviews the science of how the brain works and then presents the different types of medications that are available. You can view both videos in just 45 minutes. Check them out today!
