May is National Foster Care Month
This is a time to raise awareness of issues related to foster care and acknowledge the parents, family members, foster parents, child welfare and related professionals, mentors, policymakers, and other members of the community who help children and youth in foster care find permanent homes and connections. New Worker Training |
All new child protection workers should plan to take the following courses. Supervisors should assign these courses ASAP to ensure workers complete prerequisites and can enroll in their preferred cohort. Use this New Worker Checklist to help assign and monitor employee progress for the following courses.
New Worker Orientation: Self-Paced Modules (CWTA X110)
Ask new workers to finish this course in the first few days on the job, and remind them that they cannot register for the instructor-led course until this is complete.
New Worker Orientation: Instructor-Led Enhancement (CWTA X111)
This four-hour virtual training is designed to enhance what was learned in the Orientation modules. This course must be completed before you can register for New Worker Foundations (CWTA X113).

ICWA/MIFPA Foundations for New Workers (CWTA X219)
This training is brought to you by the University of Minnesota Duluth Tribal Training and Certification Partnership (TTCP). This introductory course covers the basics of the history of ICWA and provides information on the application of ICWA and MIFPA. This course is required to be completed before you can register for New Worker Foundations (CWTA X113).
Note: Additional ICWA/MIFPA courses listed in the Specialty Training section below will also satisfy this prerequisite.

Join a 2025-2026 PLX Cohort
The Phoenix Learning Xchange (PLX) is an interactive, multidisciplinary, non-credit certificate program. Their aim is to broaden the knowledge of the development, challenges, positive engagement and well-being of youth and adolescents involved in child welfare and other systems. Limited scholarship funding is available to Tribal and county child welfare workers (in child protection, foster care, and adoption/permanency roles). Learn more!
De-Escalation Through Mindfulness + Mending Relational Ruptures Workshop
This no-cost, in-person training is for human service professionals who want to have the ability to calm themselves and clients during tense or heated encounters. This training will also explore how to navigate through complex interactions with clients where you may have inconsistent feedback, interactions which can be ambiguous or unspoken, or you are constrained by complex systems. Training activities will include identifying causes of rupture, recognizing signs, and practicing repair skills. Learn more and register here.

Foster Parent Training Available |
Licensors with resource parents that need training should learn more about Foster Parent College and the Pre-Service Training offered by the Training Academy. Cohorts include four instructor-led, virtual trainings from 6:00-8:00 p.m. The next cohort training begins on Thursday, June 5.
