July 2025

Welcome to The Acorn! Each month we share the latest trainings and resources available to child welfare professionals throughout Minnesota.

Updates

Foundations Cohort 217: Now for New Workers AND Supervisors

As you may have seen, we have been promoting Cohort 217 as a supervisor-only course. Due to low enrollment, we have decided to open this course for new county and tribal agency workers as well. This virtual training starts on July 28. Visit our website for an overview of New Worker Training requirements, timelines, and more. Register through the Training Portal. Let us know if you have any questions.

Updates to Mandated Reporter: Effective July 1, 2025

There are new requirements for the child protection response to human trafficking (labor and sex). Visit the Training Academy's Mandated Reporter Training page to learn more, access the current policy bulletin, and watch a new video designed to identify labor trafficking in children and youth and requirements for mandated reporters.

Honoring Grief, Identity, and the Well-Being of Caregivers

July is Purposeful Parenting Month, a time to reflect on how parenting is more than a role. It’s a relationship, a journey, and at times, a profound expression of resilience.

Additional Training and Resources

2025 Permanency & Child Welfare Fall Conference

This dynamic two-day conference, offered by the Center for Advanced Studies in Child Welfare, will unite child welfare professionals and advocates in a shared mission: to deepen their expertise and sharpen their strategies for addressing the diverse and often competing needs of children, youth, and families. Save the date: October 14-15 at the Radisson Blu Mall of America. Submit proposals here. Conference registration opens Monday, July 21. Apply for a stipend here.

Family Navigation to Support Service Access

Health and social inequality are associated with multiple adverse life experiences. Some of these can include poor physical and mental health, family violence, and child maltreatment. Early engagement with culturally responsive and person-centered health care and social services can help to prevent these adversities. With this new short video (under 4 minutes), brought to you by CASCW and Jeff Waid, PhD, professionals working with families can learn about these barriers to care, and how to best support children and families as they navigate these barriers.

Family Well-Being: Strategies to Prevent Child Maltreatment and System Involvement

CASCW and DCYF have collaborated on a new fact sheet which provides an overview of family service navigation and explores current research and practices for professionals engaged in child welfare and family advocacy.

Foster Parent Training

Licensors with resource parents that need training should learn more about Foster Parent College and the Pre-Service Training offered by the Training Academy. Cohorts include four instructor-led, virtual trainings from 6:00-8:00 p.m. The next cohort training begins on Thursday, July 31.

Qualified Individual Training

This training is available to prepare clinicians and community members to become Qualified Individuals (QIs). QIs determine whether or not a child’s/youth’s needs can be met within their family or family foster home with community services rather than being placed in a childcare institution, known as a Qualified Residential Treatment Program (QRTP). If you have questions or want to express your interest in participating, email ffpsa.qualifiedindividual.dcyf@state.mn.us. Scheduled for August 19-20.
