Annual Report Now Available

This report represents the fourth year of implementation (July 2022-June 2023) for the Training Academy, with updates on training delivery, curriculum development, and more. This and previous reports can be found here

MI Skills Demonstration Course Available
Since September 2023, the Training Academy has been working to release and schedule the Motivational Interviewing (MI) courses needed for learners to complete Pathway 1. The final course - Skills Demonstration - is now available! Learn more.

Coaching Curriculum and Delivery Request for Proposal (RFP)
The Training Academy is seeking proposals from qualified Responders to develop and deliver a coaching curriculum and training for child welfare supervisors who work in Minnesota county health and human service agencies and tribal child welfare agencies. Motivational interviewing (MI) Skills for Child Welfare Professionals: Skills Demonstration | Pathway 1

In the final course, you will be asked to demonstrate your MI skills through a series of simulated encounters.

New Worker Training

New Worker Training is only for new county and tribal workers who are involved in child protection, and is assigned by a supervisor or tribal leader through the Training Portal. Participants must be able to attend all dates/times. Remind your employees that they still need to enroll in a course even after you have assigned it to them. Learn more here. The courses above are available for registration through the Minnesota Child Welfare Training Academy (MNCWTA) Training Portal. Go to our website, www.mnchildwelfaretraining.com, and then LOGIN (located in the top-right navigation). From there, select the Training Catalog, where you will find course descriptions and links to register.

Need a Training Portal Profile?
Ask your supervisor to invite you. If you are a tribal leader or supervisor, or you do not need a supervisor to assign your trainings, submit the New Profile Request Form. Be sure to use your most up-to-date email and to only use lowercase letters (for both profile requests and invitations). If you have technical issues, submit a ticket here.

Accommodation Requests
If you need a reasonable accommodation to participate in a training, contact us as soon as possible at info@mnchildwelfaretraining.com.

Attendance
Learners who miss more than 30 minutes of training will not receive credit. Learners who miss more than 30 minutes of Foundations (new worker) training will need to repeat that specific classroom. If the training takes place over several days, you can only miss 30 minutes total; not 30 minutes per day. Please plan ahead to adjust court dates, on-call shifts, caseload responsibilities, etc.

Ashlee Vaughan

Training Implementation Specialist


Ashlee has a bachelor's degree in psychology with a minor in public health. She also holds a masters in psychology. Prior to starting at MNCWTA, Ashlee was employed as an Assistant Director of Learning and Professional Development for a child welfare agency in Florida.

Spring Child Welfare Conference: Save the Date

The Center for Advanced Studies in Child Welfare is hosting the 24th Annual Spring Child Welfare Conference on April 23. The focus this year is on COVID-19’s impact on families, the workforce, and the delivery of child welfare services. The conference will be in-person at the Delta Hotel in Minneapolis, with an opportunity for groups to stream live. Registration information coming soon.


ICAR-8 International Conference on Adoption Research

The International Conference on Adoption Research (ICAR8) is a premier event for attendees from the Global South and Global North who are devoted to ensuring permanent, nurturing family care for every child. 

The conference is taking place from July 8-12 at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities Campus. Learn more.

CASCW 2024 Award Nominations

In connection with Center for Advanced Studies in Child Welfare (CASCW) 2024 Spring Conference, you are invited to nominate those in the Minnesota child welfare community who demonstrate a commitment to working with families, engagement in strengths-based work with families, a focus on reducing disparities in the child welfare system, and utilization of research-supported practice. Nominations are due by Friday, March 8.

The Child Welfare Exemplary Service Award was developed in 2015 in order to recognize Minnesota county and Tribal child welfare supervisors and frontline workers for exemplary service to children and families. 

Minnesota Child Welfare Exemplary Service Award 2024

Nomination examples for this award might include: child protection social workers; county or Tribal supervisors; and county or Tribal children's mental health, dependency, or permanency workers.

The Outstanding Service Partner in Child Welfare Award was developed in 2020 to recognize the contributions of the many frontline professionals working in a variety of disciplines who support and serve child welfare-involved children and families across Minnesota.

Nomination examples for this award might include but are not limited to: community social workers, school social workers, Guardians Ad Litem, private agency foster care and adoption workers, and many others.
